EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Lindbridge, a lost treasure from England's architectural history. Taken by an English photographer in the 20th century, this image is part of Giles Worsley's renowned book "England's Lost Houses" published in 2002. Lindbridge was originally an Elizabethan house that was later transformed into a Jacobean masterpiece for Richard Martin in 1617. However, it underwent further renovations when Sir Peter Lear acquired the property between 1660-63. In 1910, Lord Cable took ownership and made significant alterations to the house, including refacing it with red brick. Tragically, Lindbridge met its demise in a devastating fire in 1963. The photograph showcases the grandeur of Lindbridge's grounds and gardens while hinting at its early 20th-century restorations. The carolinian architecture stands as a testament to the rich history embedded within these walls. Although destroyed by fire, this country estate once stood as a magnificent stately home in Devonshire. Bridgeman Images has preserved this poignant moment through their fine art collection without any commercial intentions. This photo serves as both a historical record and a visual tribute to Lindbridge's former glory—a reminder of what once was and what could have been if not for fate's cruel intervention.
