EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enchanting St. Leonard's Hill, a lost gem of England's architectural history. Taken from Giles Worsley's renowned book "England's Lost Houses" this print showcases the haunting beauty of a bygone era. Originally known as Forest Lodge and later renamed Gloucester Lodge after its resident, the Duke of Gloucester in the late 18th century, this grand estate holds a rich historical significance. Acquired by Sir Francis Barry in 1872, he commissioned C. H. Howell to rebuild it around 1875, transforming it into an exquisite example of Victorian architecture. Sadly, time has taken its toll on St. Leonard's Hill, with only minor ruins remaining today due to partial demolition in 1924. However, through this image captured by an English photographer from the 20th century and published in 2002, we can still appreciate its former glory. The photograph reveals a striking entrance with a majestic tower standing tall against the sky. The driveway leading up to the estate adds to its allure while showcasing elements of French chateau style architecture. The facade boasts intricate details and is adorned with a portico that exudes elegance. With its pitched roof adding character to the composition and capturing light and shadows beautifully through photography techniques employed by mzphoto (not affiliated with any company), this print transports us back to the early nineteenth century when St. Leonard's Hill was at its prime. Bridgeman Images' Fine Art Finder allows us to relish in these glimpses of history preserved forever within this remarkable image.
