Do You Know: Why do men button coats left over right? (colour litho)
8668109 Do You Know: Why do men button coats left over right? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Why do men button coats left over right? The generally accepted theory for this peculiar mode is an inheritance from sword carrying days - the sword was fastened to the left, and a man buttoned his coat left over right to ensure the right-hand portion would not flap, or get caught up with the sword hilt, as the weapon was withdrawn from its sheath. This legacy comes from days when tailoring was quite different to the present craft. A woman buttons her coat the reverse way, and it is suggested this is because women almost invariably carry babies on the left arm. EDITORS COMMENTS
This color lithograph print titled "Do You Know: Why do men button coats left over right?" by the English School from the 20th century offers a fascinating insight into the historical origins of a seemingly mundane practice. The image depicts two figures, one male and one female, demonstrating how men and women traditionally button their coats in opposite directions.
The accompanying text explains that this sartorial tradition dates back to the days when men carried swords on their left side. By fastening their coats left over right, men ensured that the right-hand portion would not interfere with drawing their sword from its sheath. This practical explanation sheds light on a custom that has persisted through centuries of changing fashion trends.
Interestingly, women are said to button their coats in the opposite direction because they often carry babies on their left arm. This juxtaposition highlights how clothing choices can be influenced by practical considerations and societal norms.
Overall, this print serves as a thought-provoking reminder of the rich history behind even the most everyday actions. It invites viewers to consider how our clothing choices are shaped by traditions passed down through generations and offers a glimpse into the intricate relationship between fashion, function, and culture.
