The adze-cut shaft passes through a carved cross-piece and is plugged into a heavy stone flywheel. A thong passes through the V-shaped notch in the end of the shaft and is knotted through each end of the cross-piece. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of craftsmanship from the European School in the 15th century. Measuring at an impressive 58.4x54.6 cm, this Pump drill (ash, oak & granite) is part of the esteemed David Russell Collection. Possibly predating the 15th century, this ancient tool exhibits ingenuity and precision. The adze-cut shaft seamlessly passes through a beautifully carved cross-piece and connects to a weighty stone flywheel. A thong cleverly weaves through the V-shaped notch at the end of the shaft, securing it with knots on each side of the cross-piece. To set its motion into action, downward pressure is applied which initiates rotation in the heavy flywheel while simultaneously rewinding the thong around the shaft. This ingenious mechanism allows for reciprocating motion facilitated by one or two pairs of hands employing a pumping action. With its rich historical significance and traditional design, this pump drill serves as a testament to medieval craftsmanship and carpentry skills. Its presence evokes images of skilled artisans meticulously working on woodworking projects during that era. Bridgeman Images has expertly captured every intricate detail in this stunning photograph print from Fine Art Finder's collection. It offers viewers an opportunity to appreciate not only its functional aspects but also admire it as an exquisite work of art that stands as a symbol of human innovation throughout history.
