Before ascending the throne he was Duke of Beja. His reign ended with the dissolution of the monarchy with the 5 October 1910 revolution, and Manuel lived the rest of his life in an exile enforced by the new Portuguese First Republic.)

King Manuel II, also known as "the Patriot" or "the Unfortunate" was the last monarch to rule over Portugal. He ascended the throne following the tragic assassinations of his father, King Carlos I, and his elder brother, Luis Filipe, Prince Royal of Portugal. Prior to becoming king, he held the title of Duke of Beja. However, Manuel's reign came to an abrupt end with the dissolution of monarchy during the 5 October 1910 revolution. Forced into exile by the new Portuguese First Republic, he spent the remainder of his life away from his homeland.
