EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Little Brown Bittern, 1749-73" a beautifully coloured engraving by George Edwards. The artwork, now part of a private collection, is an exquisite collaboration between Edwards and Michael Seligmann, a German engraver and art dealer from Nuremberg. Originally engraved by George Edwards in his renowned works "A Natural History of Uncommon Birds" and "Gleanings of Natural History" this particular piece was re-engraved by Seligmann. He combined Edwards' plates with the work of Mark Catesby's "A Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands". In doing so, he translated the names into German while also adding additional figures and plants not present in the original illustrations. "The Little Brown Bittern" is depicted with remarkable detail and precision. Its elegant form stands out against a backdrop that captures its natural habitat flawlessly. This enchanting portrayal highlights both the beauty and scientific accuracy that were hallmarks of these historical natural history engravings. As we admire this print today, we are reminded not only of the artistic talent behind it but also its significant contribution to our understanding of birds, animals, and nature as a whole. It serves as a testament to the enduring appeal and importance of such timeless pieces in preserving our natural heritage for generations to come.
