EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Regimental Guidon of the 23rd Light Dragoons, a significant artifact from 1809. The guidon, made of vibrant red fabric adorned with intricate gold embroidery and tassels, is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of the English School in the 19th century. The guidon bears a painted design and inscriptions that recount its remarkable history. It proudly displays references to pivotal battles such as Peninsula, Talavera, Waterloo, and Egypt. This particular guidon holds great historical significance as it was carried by the 23rd Light Dragoons during the Battle of Talavera in 1809. During this fateful battle against French forces, these brave dragoons charged valiantly but tragically failed to see an unexpected ditch that resulted in numerous casualties for both men and horses. Following this devastating loss, the regiment returned to England. Notably, this event marked a poignant moment in British military history as it became the last time a cavalry guidon was carried into battle by a British unit. The emblematic crown atop this regal flag symbolizes loyalty and honor within their ranks. Preserved at London's National Army Museum today, this photograph immortalizes not only an exquisite piece of militaria but also commemorates those who served bravely under its banner.
