Armentieres - Le Pont de Nieppe. During World War I, in April 1918, German forces shelled Armentieres with mustard gas. British troops were forced to evacuate the area but German troops could not enter the commune for two weeks because of the heavy contamination. Witnesses to the bombardment stated that the shelling was so heavy that liquid mustard ran in the streets. This beautiful 18th century three span bridge was also destroyed during the war. EDITORS COMMENTS
Armentieres - Le Pont de Nieppe: A Remnant of Tranquility Amidst the Ruins of War Amidst the bleak landscapes of devastation and destruction wrought by the First World War, the serene image of Armentieres - Le Pont de Nieppe stands as a poignant reminder of a time long past. This beautiful 18th century three span bridge, spanning the River Nieppe, once bore witness to the bustling activity of barges plying their trade on the water. However, the tranquility of this idyllic scene was shattered in April 1918, when German forces unleashed a barrage of mustard gas upon the commune of Armentieres. The shelling was so intense that liquid mustard ran in the streets, forcing British troops to evacuate the area. The German troops, unable to enter the commune for two weeks due to the heavy contamination, were left to gaze upon the destruction from a distance. The bridge, like much of Armentieres, was reduced to rubble. This haunting photograph, taken circa 1900s, captures the essence of a time and place forever altered by the horrors of war. The image of the bridge, now a mere shadow of its former self, serves as a poignant reminder of the past, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, and a call to remember the sacrifices made during the Great War.
