Maharana Bhim Singh frolics with noblemen in the palace pool
5857965 Maharana Bhim Singh frolics with noblemen in the palace pool, 1803 (opaque w/c & gold on paper) by Chokha (fl.1799-1824); 32.5x45.4 cm; San Diego Museum of Art, USA; (add.info.: Court of Mewar, Rajasthan
Maharana Bhim Singh frolics in the pool in the palace on Jagnivas Island in the lake at Udaipur, attended by courtiers and priests and observed by the ranis. The yellow turbans and yellow clothing of the women suggest that the occasion was the celebration of Basant Panchmi, a spring festival which occurs when the weather begins to be hot. On this day people wear yellow, the color of the flowering mustard fields. Some of the revellers in the pool use gilded flotation devices.
The artist must have sat on the roof to sketch this scene. Just below the viewers vantage point is the room within a pavilion where the rug appears to be at the top of the room, as it would be if you put your head over the edge and looked down. The painting was cut down at some time, no doubt to tidy shredding edges, but originally would have shown all of the deck and pavillions around the pool.); eSan Diego Museum of Art; Edwin Binney 3rd Collection; Indian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of joy and celebration in the court of Maharana Bhim Singh, ruler of Mewar, Rajasthan. The image showcases the Maharana frolicking with noblemen in the palace pool on Jagnivas Island in Udaipur. As he enjoys his time in the water, surrounded by courtiers and priests, the ranis observe from a distance. The vibrant yellow turbans and clothing worn by both men and women indicate that this gathering is part of Basant Panchmi, a spring festival celebrated when temperatures start to rise. It is customary for people to wear yellow attire during this occasion as it symbolizes blooming mustard fields. Notably, some individuals can be seen using gilded flotation devices while enjoying their time in the pool. The artist's perspective suggests that they sketched this scene from an elevated position on the roof. Just below our vantage point lies a room within a pavilion where we catch a glimpse of a rug placed at its top edge. Although this painting has been cut down over time, presumably to tidy up frayed edges, it originally depicted all surrounding decks and pavilions encircling the pool. This exquisite artwork belongs to San Diego Museum of Art's Edwin Binney 3rd Collection and offers us an enchanting glimpse into historical royal festivities captured through Chokha's skilled brushstrokes.
