EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait, titled "George Clarke, Esq. of Hackney" captures the essence of a distinguished gentleman from centuries past. Painted by Gilbert Jackson in the 17th century, this oil on canvas print is now housed in the Hackney Museum in London. In this remarkable artwork, George Clarke stands tall within an elegant oval frame. He exudes an air of authority and intellect as he dons a black robe with a brown waistcoat and a large puritan-style white collar. His shoulder-length grey hair cascades straight below his black hat, framing his face adorned with a neat mustache and trimmed goatee beard. The painting not only showcases George Clarke's physical appearance but also provides insight into his philanthropic nature. According to historical records discovered by Alexander Chalmers, it is revealed that Mr. Clarke left behind a generous legacy for the benefit of others through various charitable acts. Through his will dated 1668, George Clarke allocated funds from his lands in Hackney marsh to support different causes such as sermons and assistance for those less fortunate. The money was distributed among parish officials, women residing in Spurstowes almshouses, and impoverished housekeepers from Church Street and Mare Street. As we gaze upon this exquisite piece of artistry today, we are reminded not only of George Clarke's timeless presence but also of the enduring impact he had on society through his benevolence.
