EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving from the 19th century showcases a selection of newly-discovered fish, revealing the wonders of marine life in exquisite detail. The print, part of a private collection, is believed to have been featured in Friedrich Justin Bertuch's renowned "Picture Book for Children" published between 1790 and 1830. The artwork highlights four distinct species: the three-colored Gomphose, Gaimard's Peacock Wrasse, the yellow Cheilinus or Iru, and Duperrey's Peacock Wrasse. Each fish is depicted with meticulous precision and vibrant colors that bring them to life on paper. From left to right, we see the striking Gomphosus tricolor with its unique blend of blue, green, and yellow hues. Next is Julis gaimard showcasing its mesmerizing patterns resembling an elegant peacock tail. The golden Cheilio auratus follows suit with its radiant yellow body contrasting against intricate markings. Finally, Julis duperrey completes the quartet with its enchanting combination of blues and purples. This remarkable engraving not only serves as a visual delight but also offers valuable insights into these lesser-known aquatic creatures. It reminds us of the vast diversity that exists beneath our oceans' surfaces while capturing our imagination through artistry and scientific discovery.
