EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning mosaics in the main apse of the 12th-century Duomo (Cattedrale di Santa Maria Nuova) in Monreale, Sicily. The intricate Byzantine artwork, created by unknown artists during that period, is a true testament to their exceptional craftsmanship. The Monreale Cathedral itself is an architectural marvel and has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built between 1170 and 1189 under the patronage of King William II, it exemplifies Norman Arabic architecture with its unique blend of styles. Inside this magnificent cathedral lies a cloister adorned with 228 white marble columns featuring intricately carved capitals depicting biblical episodes. However, it is the monumental golden mosaics adorning the arches of the central nave that truly steal the show. These complex mosaics narrate stories from the ancient testament in a visually striking manner. The Duomo di Monreale stands not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of cultural heritage and artistic excellence. Its fusion of different architectural influences creates an awe-inspiring sight for visitors from around the world. This remarkable print by Giulio Azzarello captures both the grandeur and delicate details present within these historic mosaics, allowing viewers to appreciate their beauty even from afar.
