EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Anne Morgan, an extraordinary American philanthropist and advocate for social reform, leading a delegation from the American Committee for Devastated France. The image is a cover illustration from 1922, beautifully rendered in color lithography by the French School of the 20th century. Anne Morgan's remarkable story unfolds through this photograph. Born into great wealth as the daughter of renowned financier J. P. Morgan, she dedicated her life to championing causes close to her heart. A suffragist and women's rights activist, she used her inherited fortune to bring about meaningful change in early 20th-century America. However, it was Anne's deep love for France that led her on a path of immense compassion and service during World War I. She spearheaded relief efforts through the American Committee for Devastated France, recruiting hundreds of young American women who became instrumental in post-war reconstruction. Together they established networks of visiting nurses, libraries, and schools in areas ravaged by war. The Chateau of Blerancourt became their headquarters – a symbol of hope rising from destruction – later transforming into the Museum of French-American History. Even during World War II when chaos engulfed Europe once again, this sanctuary provided medical care and refuge for countless refugees. Anne Morgan's unwavering dedication did not go unnoticed; she became the first American woman appointed as commander of the prestigious French Legion of Honour. This print serves as both a testament to Anne Morgan's tireless efforts and an enduring reminder that even amidst devastation and despair, humanity can rise above adversity with compassion and determination. It encapsulates her legacy as an icon whose indomitable spirit continues to inspire generations today.
