EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning George III giltwood sofa, crafted in 1765 by the renowned designer Robert Adam and master cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale. The exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident in every aspect of this piece. The sofa features a serpentine padded back, gracefully outscrolled arms, and a serpentine seat covered in luxurious blue floral damask cut silk-velvet. The intricate design is further enhanced by the carved anthemia cresting at the top, bordered with foliage-wrapped reeding. Delicate husks adorn the arms and seat edges, while sunflower double rosettes add an elegant touch. The deep seat-rail is adorned with a central shell framed by griffins and sphinxes that beautifully frame the legs. Cabriole legs with hairy-paw feet ringed by beaded girdles complete the sophisticated look of this masterpiece. Although some restoration work has been done over time, including replacement feet and upholstery tacking-rails added to enhance stability, it still retains its original charm. Originally oil-gilt, it now boasts a water-gilt finish over a thin lacquer with traces of its original gilding. This remarkable George III giltwood sofa exemplifies timeless elegance and serves as a testament to the skillful artistry of both Adam and Chippendale. It stands as an exquisite example of Georgian furniture design that continues to captivate viewers even today.
