938046 Cangrande (stone) by Italian School, (14th century); Museo del Castelvecchio, Verona, Italy; (add.info.: Cangrande (christened Can Francesco) della Scala (9 March 1291 - 22 July 1329) was an Italian nobleman, the most celebrated of the della Scala family which ruled Verona from 1277 until 1387. Now perhaps best known as the leading patron of the poet Dante Alighieri, Cangrande was in his own day chiefly acclaimed as a successful warrior and autocrat. Between becoming sole ruler of Verona in 1311 and his death in 1329 he took control of several neighbouring cities, notably Vicenza, Padua and Treviso, and came to be regarded as the leader of the Ghibelline faction in northern Italy.); eGiuliano Valsecchi; Italian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent sculpture of Cangrande, a renowned Italian nobleman from the 14th century. The stone artwork, created by an anonymous Italian artist, can be found in the Museo del Castelvecchio in Verona, Italy. Cangrande della Scala was not only a powerful ruler but also a prominent patron of the esteemed poet Dante Alighieri. Born on March 9th, 1291, he ruled over Verona from 1311 until his untimely death on July 22nd, 1329. During his reign, Cangrande expanded his influence by conquering neighboring cities such as Vicenza, Padua, and Treviso. The equestrian statue captures Cangrande's commanding presence as both a successful warrior and autocrat. Adorned in armor and caparisoned with intricate details that reflect medieval Italian craftsmanship at its finest. Standing atop an ornate gothic plinth with his loyal steed beneath him. This remarkable piece symbolizes not only the power and authority of Cangrande but also represents the ruling Della Scala family's legacy in Verona during this era. Giuliano Valsecchi skillfully captured this timeless masterpiece through photography while preserving its historical significance for future generations to admire. This print serves as a testament to both artistic excellence and historical importance within Italian culture.
