828832 Nebuchadnezzar, 1795 (tempera, pen & ink and w/c on paper) by Blake, William (1757-1827); 43x60.3 cm; Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN, USA; (add.info.: Nebuchadnezzar II (c.634 - 562 BC) was king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, who reigned c. 605 BC - 562 BC. He is credited with the construction of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and for the destruction of the First Temple. He is featured in the Book of Daniel and is mentioned in several other books of the Bible.
While boasting about his achievements, Nebuchadnezzar is humbled by God. The king loses his sanity and lives in the wild like an animal for seven years. After this, his sanity and position are restored and he praises and honors God. There has been some speculation on what the organic cause of this insanity might have been. Some consider it to be an attack of clinical lycanthropy or alternatively porphyria.); eMinneapolis Institute of Art; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print of "Nebuchadnezzar, 1795" by William Blake takes us back in time to the reign of one of history's most powerful and enigmatic rulers. Nebuchadnezzar II, the king of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, is depicted here in all his glory and madness. Blake's use of tempera, pen & ink, and watercolor on paper brings out the intricate details of this artwork. The vibrant colors and delicate brushstrokes create a sense of depth and emotion that draws viewers into Nebuchadnezzar's world. Inscribed within ancient scriptures, Nebuchadnezzar's story unfolds before our eyes. Known for his grand achievements such as building the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and destroying the First Temple, he was a man who reveled in his power. However, God humbled him for his arrogance. This haunting image captures Nebuchadnezzar at his lowest point - stripped away from civilization and reduced to living like an animal in the wilderness for seven long years. It raises questions about what caused this descent into madness; some speculate it may have been clinical lycanthropy or porphyria. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from Minneapolis Institute of Arts' collection, we are reminded not only of Nebuchadnezzar's fall but also his redemption. After regaining sanity and position, he praises and honors God with newfound humility. "Nebuchadnezzar" serves as a timeless reminder that even those with immense power can be brought low by their own hubris – a cautionary tale etched onto paper by Blake's masterful hand.
