XYC111962 George, 3rd Earl Cowper, with the Family of Charles Gore, c.1775 (oil on canvas) by Zoffany, Johann (1733-1810); 78.7x97.8 cm; Yale Center for British Art, Paul Mellon Collection, USA; (add.info.: commissioned by George Nassau (1738-89) 3rd Earl Cowper, on the occasion of his marriage to Anne Gore; or by the Gore family to celebrate the marriage of Hannah Anne Gore to George, 3rd Earl Cowper, both seen standing. In 1774 Charles Gore (seated) took his wife and three daughters to Florence, where Lord Cowper, an expatriate collector and patron of the arts, met Hannah Anne, then aged sixteen (both standing). The painting is set in Italy, with a view of Tuscan hills beyond the brideas mother and sister on the right. Above Hannah Anne is a painted allegory showing Hercules evicting the figure of Envy from the Temple of Hymen, an allusion perhaps to the termination of Cowperas past love affairs. The musical harmonies produced by Hannahas sister Emile, playing an early square piano, and her father, who plays the cello, suggest the marital harmony that awaits the newlyweds); English, out of copyright

George, 3rd Earl Cowper, with the Family of Charles Gore, c. 1775
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by Johann Zoffany that offers a glimpse into the lives of two prominent families in 18th-century England. Commissioned either to celebrate the marriage between George Nassau, the Earl Cowper, and Anne Gore or as a commemoration of Hannah Anne Gore's union with George Cowper, this artwork showcases familial bonds and musical harmony. Set against the backdrop of picturesque Tuscan hills, we see Hannah Anne standing proudly beside her new husband while her mother and sister observe from afar. Above them hovers an allegorical scene depicting Hercules banishing Envy from the Temple of Hymen - symbolizing a fresh start for Lord Cowper after his previous romantic entanglements. The painting also highlights the importance of music within these families' lives. Emile, Hannah Anne's sister, skillfully plays an early square piano while their father gracefully handles a cello. This harmonious display hints at marital bliss awaiting George and Hannah Anne as they embark on their journey together. With its rich details and masterful execution by Zoffany, "George, 3rd Earl Cowper with the Family of Charles Gore" not only captures a specific moment in history but also invites viewers to ponder themes such as love, family ties, and artistic patronage during this era in British society.
