The Sea-Beach after a Storm - Time, Dawn (oil on canvas)

2956914 The Sea-Beach after a Storm - Time, Dawn (oil on canvas) by Wyllie, William Lionel (1851-1931); 76.2x127 cm; Private Collection; (add.info.: A romantic and dramatic early painting that won Wyllie the Royal Academys Turner Gold Medal for the best painting of a coast scene at the very young age of 18. It launched his career, and he became one of Britains greatest sea painters. He must have painted it quickly, for the prize was awarded in December 1869, and the adventure the painting describes the aftermath of happened only three months earlier on the exposed coast of France at Wimereaux, north of Boulogne, where Wyllie was brought up (in a house that was washed away by a storm three years later): In the fiercest gale that anyone could remember, a topsail schooner ran aground. The crew, who could not swim, had already lost the ships boat and were being watched helplessly from the beach by a crowd, when William and his two brothers charged into the water. They were knocked down, battered and thrown back. Many times they disappeared into the waves and everyone thought that they were lost. The youngest one [Williams brother Charles] eventually had to return to the beach but the other two continued to battle on... just before they reached the wreck they seemed to falter. Then, with a last effort and to the frenzied cheers of the crew, a rope was thrown to them from the ship and with it they returned to the shore. and the lives of the seven men aboard the ship were saved. Nor was the rescue affected a moment too soon for almost immediately the ship was rent asunder.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Sea-Beach after a Storm - Time, Dawn" is a captivating oil painting by William Lionel Wyllie that depicts the aftermath of a dramatic rescue at sea. This early masterpiece won Wyllie the prestigious Turner Gold Medal from the Royal Academy when he was just 18 years old, propelling him into his illustrious career as one of Britain's greatest sea painters. The painting transports us to the exposed coast of France at Wimereaux, where Wyllie grew up and witnessed an extraordinary event. In December 1869, during a ferocious gale, a topsail schooner ran aground with its crew helplessly watched from the beach by onlookers. Without hesitation, young William and his two brothers charged into the treacherous waters in an attempt to save them. Battered and thrown back repeatedly by powerful waves, they persevered until they reached the ship. Just as it seemed their strength might fail them, a rope was thrown from the vessel's deck. With this lifeline in hand, they returned triumphantly to shore amidst frenzied cheers from both spectators and sailors alike. Wyllie's painting captures this pivotal moment of rescue with incredible detail and emotion. The crashing waves convey both danger and hope while highlighting humanity's resilience in face of adversity. Through his brushstrokes, we can almost hear the roar of wind and water as well as feel the tension that hung in the air during this heroic act. This remarkable artwork serves not only as a testament to Wyllie's talent but also commemorates an act of bravery that saved seven lives on that fateful day off Wimereaux's coast.
