EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent punch bowl painted with intricate details of warehouses or Hongs in Canton (Guangzhou) during the Qing Dynasty's Qianlong Period. Measuring 15.2x36.9 cm, this porcelain masterpiece is housed at Leeds Museums and Art Galleries in Temple Newsam House, UK. The bowl's exterior presents a mesmerizing view of the hongs, which were European and American workshops or warehouses situated along the Pearl River in Canton. These bustling structures served as vital trading hubs during that era. The inside of the bowl features a depiction of the East India Company ship Pitt, further emphasizing its historical significance. Despite some wear to its gilt decoration, this large circular bowl still exudes elegance and craftsmanship. Its rim boasts a delicate gilt cell-patterned border while being surrounded by a double grisaille band at the foot. Crafted at Jingdezhen, renowned for its porcelain production, this piece was then expertly painted and decorated in Canton before finding its way to Leeds Museums and Art Galleries. A true testament to Chinese artistry and history, this punch bowl offers viewers an enchanting glimpse into Guangzhou's past as it stood centuries ago – an exquisite fusion of culture, trade, and artistic expression captured within delicate porcelain walls.
