Model of the conjoined brains of Ladan and Laleh Bijani used by Dr. Ben Carson, 2003

African-American neurosurgeon, author, and politician Benjamin Solomon Carson Sr. (born 1951) served as the 17th United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development from 2017 to 2021. He was a candidate for President of the United States in the 2016 Republican primaries. This white plaster model shows the conjoined brains of twin sisters Ladan and Laleh Bijani who were joined at the head. Carson, a member of the surgical team that performed an operation to separate the twins, estimated that each sister had a fifty-fifty chance of survival. Unfortunately Ladan and Laleh died immediately after their complicated surgical separation. The veins in the brain are highlighted in a contrasting light blue-green color. Two (2) small holes are drilled into the bottom so the model can be mounted on a stand

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a white plaster model of the conjoined brains of Ladan and Laleh Bijani, two remarkable twin sisters who were tragically joined at the head. Dr. Ben Carson, an accomplished African-American neurosurgeon, author, and politician, played a pivotal role in their story. Serving as a member of the surgical team that attempted to separate them, Carson estimated that each sister had a fifty-fifty chance of survival. The intricate details of this model are brought to life through contrasting light blue-green colors highlighting the veins within the brain. Two small holes drilled into its bottom allow for easy mounting on a stand, making it an intriguing object for study and reflection. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of medical professionals like Dr. Carson and his team, Ladan and Laleh did not survive long after their complex separation surgery. Their courageous journey serves as a poignant reminder of both the incredible advancements in medicine and the delicate nature of human life. Displayed at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this heritage art piece symbolizes not only scientific progress but also represents an important chapter in black history. It stands as a testament to Dr. Benjamin Solomon Carson Sr. 's contributions to neurosurgery while also honoring these brave twins whose lives were intertwined in ways most could never comprehend. As we observe this photograph print with reverence, let us remember those who have dedicated their lives to pushing boundaries in science and medicine while acknowledging that some battles can still be lost despite our best intentions.
