The burning of HMS 'Royal James' at the Battle of Solebay, 28 May 1672, late 17th century (oil on canvas)

7337622 The burning of HMS 'Royal James' at the Battle of Solebay, 28 May 1672, late 17th century (oil on canvas) by Velde, Willem van de, the Younger (1633-1707); 106.7x153.7 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: Willem van de Velde, the Younger
The Battle of Solebay was the opening battle of the Third Anglo-Dutch War, 1672-1674. On the evening before, Admiral Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich, urged the Duke of York to take the fleet to sea to avoid the risk of being surprised by the Dutch while at anchor on a lee shore in Solebay (Southwold Bay, Suffolk) on the English east coast. The advice was not taken and the Dutch fleet, commanded by Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, did appear and attacked Sandwich's unsupported squadron in the bay. Sandwich, in the 'Royal James', 100 guns, was heavily engaged with the squadron of Admiral Van Ghent, who sent in two fireships. The 'Royal James' sank them both but a third fireship, commanded by Jan van de Rijn, grappled the English flagship and set her ablaze. When she was engulfed by the flames Sandwich tried to escape by boat, but it was swamped by people who jumped into her with him and he was drowned.); © National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oil on canvas print captures the intense and tragic moment of the burning of HMS 'Royal James' at the Battle of Solebay on 28 May 1672. Painted by Willem van de Velde, the Younger, this late 17th-century masterpiece showcases the chaos and destruction of war at sea. The Battle of Solebay marked the beginning of the Third Anglo-Dutch War, with Admiral Edward Montagu urging caution to avoid being surprised by Dutch forces. However, his advice was not heeded, leading to a fierce confrontation in Southwold Bay. The English flagship 'Royal James', under Admiral Sandwich's command, found itself heavily engaged with Dutch fireships sent by Admiral Van Ghent. Despite sinking two fireships, 'Royal James' fell victim to a third one commanded by Jan van de Rijn. The flames engulfed the mighty vessel as Sandwich attempted to escape but tragically perished in the process. This dramatic scene captured on canvas serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during times of conflict at sea. Displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London, this painting is not just a historical record but also a powerful depiction of bravery and tragedy amidst naval warfare in the 17th century.
