EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases three exquisite cups made of silver-gilt and parcel-gilt silver, dating back to the 17th century Hungarian School. The tallest cup stands at an impressive height of 31.8 cm and is part of a private collection. On the left, we see a Hungarian parcel-gilt silver beaker, believed to be from Brassa in the mid-17th century. Its cylindrical shape rests on a trumpet foot adorned with a molded zig-zag band. The entire piece is beautifully embossed, flat-chased, and engraved with intricate strapwork designs that enclose fruit and foliage on a matted ground. In the center lies a Hungarian silver-gilt cup and cover bearing marks by Johannes (Hans) Schelker from Nagyszeben around 1640 for the cup and Johannes Christophorus Schwartz from Nagyszeben circa 1700 for the cover. This cylindrical cup features chased lobes on its circular waisted foot as well as cast strapwork surmounted by caryatids on its tubular stem. The body is repousséand chased with stunning strapwork motifs enclosing fruit and foliage above floral motifs. Lastly, we have another Hungarian parcel-gilt silver beaker, possibly originating from Brassa in the mid-17th century. It bears the maker's mark "PG" under its base and boasts an elegant tapering cylindrical shape resting upon a trumpet foot with molded zig-zag bands. Similar to its counterparts, this beaker exhibits bands of strapwork enclosing foliage on a matted ground through expert flat-chasing and engraving techniques. These remarkable cups exemplify exceptional craftsmanship from Hungary's rich artistic heritage during the 17th century.
