EDITORS COMMENTS
The House of Bijapur, c. 1680" is a captivating and intricate artwork that offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural diversity of India during the 17th century. Created by artists Kamal Muhammad and Chand Muhammad from the Deccani School, this painting showcases their mastery in ink, opaque watercolor, gold, and silver on paper. The Adil Shahi dynasty, which ruled the Sultanate of Bijapur for several generations until its downfall in 1686, is depicted here with all nine sultans portrayed. The vastness of Bijapur's territory is suggested through scenic views of water that extend to Goa on the Arabian Sea. One notable scene captures Isma'il, founder of Iran's Safavid dynasty, handing a key to Yusuf as a symbol of allegiance to the Shi'ite creed. However, it is intriguing to note that under Ibrahim II's rule during its golden period (1579-1626), Bijapur embraced Hinduism and Sufism before adopting Sunnism as the state religion in 1583. The painting also highlights various elements such as royal attire worn by monarchs and courtiers alike. It showcases traditional Indian dress styles along with Islamic regalia befitting their dynastic status. This remarkable piece provides an insight into not only political alliances but also social dynamics within the courtly setting. From attendants to domestic servants like cleaners and housemaids meticulously illustrated alongside rulers enthroned in splendorous settings - every detail contributes to capturing life within "The House of Bijapur.
