EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Complutensian Polyglot Bible, a remarkable piece of literary history. Printed by Arnao Guillen de Brocar in the 16th century, this engraving captures the essence of one of the earliest and most significant polyglots ever created. The University of St. Andrews in Scotland is fortunate to house this invaluable treasure. Also known as the Alcala or Ximenes Polyglot, this masterpiece was meticulously crafted based on a selection of manuscripts acquired by Cardinal Ximenes or loaned by Pope Leo X from the Vatican. Its fifth volume titled "Nouum Testamentum grece & latine in academia Complutensi nouiter impressum" holds particular importance. Each title page proudly displays Cardinal Ximemes' arms printed in red, except for the New Testament where they are elegantly presented in black. Atop all titles lies an intriguing inscription: "Haec tibi pentadecas tetragonon respicit illus hospitium petri [et] pauli ter quinq[ue] dierum". This phrase symbolizes its connection to both ancient and modern instruments, signifying their harmonious coexistence within its pages. The Complutensian Polyglot was skillfully edited by Diego LAopez de Zuniga alongside Elio Antonio de Lebrija, Fernando Nunez de Guzman, Juan de Vergara, Pedro de Vergara, Demetrios Ducas, Alphonso de Alcala and Pedro Coronel. Although it began around 1502 and took several years to complete printing between 1514 and 1517, it only received papal authorization in 1522. This extraordinary work represents an unparalleled collaboration between scholars and printers during a time when knowledge was highly sought after but difficult to access. Its significance cannot be overstated as it stands as a testament to the dedication and intellectual prowess of those involved in its creation.
