Mezzotint published 1750 circa.
The Battle of Culloden on 27 April 1746 (Modern Calendar; 16 April Old Style) was the last pitched battle fought on the British mainland. After weeks of retreat, Bonnie Prince CharlieAs Jacobite army numbered barely 5, 000 dispirited and starving men. The Duke of Cumberland, with 9, 000 Government troops under his command, finally caught up with his opponents at Culloden, east of Inverness.
The Highlanders employed their traditional tactic of a ferocious charge against the British line, but CumberlandAs infantry stood firm and the attacking Jacobites were swept by musket fire. Although they succeeded in breaking through in some places, they were quickly repulsed. CumberlandAs cavalry then attacked the Highlanders from both flanks, and the Jacobite army rapidly disintegrated. The last battle of the Jacobite Rebellions probably lasted less than an hour.); eNational Army Museum; out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "A View of the Battle of Culloden in Scotland, 1746" a mezzotint created by an unknown artist in the 18th century. The artwork is housed at the National Army Museum in London and provides a vivid depiction of this historic battle. Taking place on April 16th, 1746, the Battle of Culloden marked the final pitched battle fought on British soil. The Duke of Cumberland led his Government troops against Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite army, which had dwindled to just 5,000 men after weeks of retreat and hardship. In this artwork, we witness the clash between Highlanders and British soldiers as they engage in fierce combat. The Highlanders employ their traditional tactic of charging headlong into battle while Cumberland's infantry stands firm and delivers devastating musket fire. Despite some initial breakthroughs by the Jacobites, Cumberland's cavalry swiftly attacks from both flanks, causing chaos among their ranks. Within less than an hour, the once formidable Jacobite army disintegrates under relentless assault. The significance of this battle cannot be overstated; it effectively ended any hopes for a Stuart restoration to claim the British throne. This mezzotint captures not only the intensity but also serves as a historical record that immortalizes this pivotal moment in Scottish history. Bridgeman Images has skillfully preserved this remarkable piece through their fine art finder service. As viewers gaze upon this print today, they are transported back to that fateful day when destiny was decided on Culloden Moor.
