EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 19th century, capturing a horse walking through the picturesque village of Shurakhan in Kyrgyzstan. The drawing, skillfully crafted by Emile Bayard, was created to illustrate the remarkable journey undertaken by Arminius Vambery, a Hungarian scientist disguised as a dervish. In 1863, Vambery embarked on an expedition to Central Asia, venturing into unknown territories with his trusty steed. This engraving from "Le tour du monde" edited by Edouard Charton in 1865, beautifully depicts this momentous adventure. The image transports us to a time when daily life revolved around traditional customs and handicrafts. As we gaze upon this scene, we can almost hear the bustling sounds of negotiation and commerce echoing through the air. A travelling merchant engages with locals while sitting atop his horse adorned with vibrant fabrics. The enchanting atmosphere is further enhanced by the presence of other animals peacefully grazing nearby. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every stroke of his pen; even the walking stick held by one of the villagers adds authenticity to this snapshot of history. Leonard de Selva's photograph perfectly captures this timeless artwork from his private collection. It serves as a reminder that despite being taken over a century ago, these scenes continue to evoke curiosity and fascination for those captivated by Asian culture and traditions.
