Print, after Thomas King's 1767 oil portrait, in the collection of the Science Museum, London. The timekeeper in the gimballed table case behind Harrison is 'H3'. In the original portrait Harrison's right hand holds the watch he had made by John Jeffreys for work on H3 but which then inspired the change of direction that led him to develop H4. The latter was complete and famous by the time the print was made so the engraver was asked, in the conversion process, to remove the Jeffreys watch and include H4 lying on the table as shown here. EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning mezzotint print captures the essence of John Harrison, a legendary figure in the history of horology. Created by Philippe Joseph Tassaert after Thomas King's 1767 oil portrait, this piece is a true masterpiece that showcases Harrison with his groundbreaking invention, the marine chronometer.
In the original portrait housed at the Science Museum in London, Harrison is depicted with his innovative timekeeper 'H3' in a gimballed table case. However, what sets this print apart is the inclusion of 'H4', another one of Harrison's remarkable creations that revolutionized navigation at sea. The engraver skillfully removed the watch made by John Jeffreys and replaced it with H4 on the table, highlighting Harrison's progression and success in perfecting his timekeeping devices.
As we gaze upon this print, we are transported back to a time when precision and accuracy were paramount for sailors navigating treacherous waters. John Harrison's dedication to improving maritime technology shines through in every detail captured by Tassaert. This artwork serves as a tribute to an ingenious inventor whose legacy continues to inspire generations of scientists and explorers around the world.
