EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a Romanesque mosaic of the four rivers, dating back to the 12th century, found in the pavement of the altar of the chapel of Saint Nicholas inside the Old Episcopal Palace. The intricate details and symbolism depicted in this artwork are truly mesmerizing. Around the polar star at the center, we see representations of Earth's Paradise rivers - Tiger, Euphrates, Gehon, and Phison - portrayed as heads of human bulls spitting nets of water. Each river is accompanied by symbols that likely reference different periods in Holy History.
The artwork also includes depictions of land and freshwater animals such as fish, crayfish, pelican, dog, and stork in the West-East section. Moving towards the northeast corner reveals a marine world with red waves, black algae, and fish. Wind heads and rosettes symbolize the four cardinal points while a red stream represents Ocean River surrounding Earth.
The southeast part showcases vegetation fertilized by water alongside pecked birds. With dimensions measuring 3.60x4.40 meters on display in Die (Drome), this Symbolic representation of Universe mosaic is not just an artistic marvel but also a historical treasure worth admiring for its rich symbolism and intricate craftsmanship captured beautifully in this print by © Jean Bernard from Fine Art Finder.
