The Most Noble Charles Marquis Cornwallis - A Distinguished Leader and Statesman

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases the esteemed figure of Charles Marquis Cornwallis, a man of great influence and accomplishment. As Master General of the Ordnance, Lieutenant General, and General Governor of Ireland, Cornwallis held significant positions within his Majesty's Kingdom. The stipple engraving by Benjamin Smith after John Singleton Copley RA beautifully captures the essence of this remarkable individual. Published in September 1798, it serves as a testament to Cornwallis' distinguished career and noble character. Born in 1738, Cornwallis embarked on an illustrious journey that began with his education at Eton and Clare College. His military service included notable battles such as Minden in Hannover. Rising through the ranks, he became a respected captain before venturing into politics. Cornwallis' contributions extended beyond Europe; he played a crucial role during the American Revolutionary War. Serving under General Clinton, he participated in numerous battles across America's eastern seaboard. Notably, his leadership was instrumental in securing victory at Yorktown alongside French forces. Returning to Britain with laurels adorning his name, Cornwallis assumed various high-ranking positions both domestically and abroad. He introduced reforms as governor general of India while engaging in conflicts against Tipu Sultan during the 3rd Mysore War. His final assignment brought him back to Ireland as commander-in-chief and lord lieutenant where he successfully quelled rebellion and thwarted French invasion attempts in 1798. Charles Marquis Cornwallis left an indelible mark on history through his military prowess, political acumen, legal reforms, and administrative achievements. He remains forever immortalized through this exquisite portrait that now resides within London's National Army Museum—a fitting tribute to one of Britain's most noble leaders.
