7342530 An unidentifed naval officer(?) standing by the belaying pin rail on the port side of the 80-gun three-decker HMS 'Superb' (1842). Inversed digital file to create b&w positive., 1845 (calotype negative, paper) by Talbot, William Henry Fox (1800-77); 16.8x12.3 cm; National Maritime Museum, London, UK; (add.info.: Creator: William Henry Fox Talbot; Nicolaas Henneman
A paper calotype negative. A head-to-shin portrait photograph of an unidentified naval officer(?) leaning on a belaying pin rail with his left arm resting on the rail. He has his cap in his right hand. He is standing on the port side of the 80-gun Second Rate, three-decker HMS 'Superb' (1842) between first and second 32-pounder gun before the ship's waist. Part of the breech ropes of the second gun can be seen on the left of the image. Behind him is the high ship's barricade/bulwark with the canvas cover on the top protecting the stowed hammocks. HMS 'Superb' was part of the Experimental Squadron sent to sea to test the Symonds designs against earlier warship designs.

It is not certain who took the photograph, as both Talbot and Henneman, acting as his assistant, were on board at the time. (See article 'Talbot and Henneman, Mount Edgcumbe and Plymouth Dockyard Images' by Michael Grey in "The PhotoHistorian", Autumn 2014). Talbot and Henneman had arrived at Mount Edgecumbe by 20 September and Calvert Jones wrote to Talbot on 1 October 'You were fortunate in having such capital subjects as the experimental squadron and I shall be most anxious to see a specimen.' EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures an unidentified naval officer standing proudly by the belaying pin rail on the port side of the majestic 80-gun three-decker HMS 'Superb' in 1845. The officer, possibly a commanding figure aboard the ship, leans casually on the rail with his cap held in his right hand, exuding an air of authority and confidence. The intricate details of the ship's structure are visible in the background, showcasing the impressive size and power of this Second Rate warship. The high ship's barricade with its canvas cover protecting stowed hammocks adds to the authenticity and historical significance of this image. Taken as a calotype negative by renowned photographer William Henry Fox Talbot or his assistant Nicolaas Henneman, this photograph is a testament to their skill and artistry. It offers a glimpse into naval life during that era, capturing a moment frozen in time aboard one of Britain's most formidable warships. As part of an Experimental Squadron sent to sea to test new designs against older ones, HMS 'Superb' played a crucial role in shaping naval warfare history. This print serves as a valuable record of that period, preserving both the visual beauty and historical importance of this iconic vessel for generations to come.
