EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the exquisite beauty of "The statues of St. John the Baptist, St. Regulus and St. Sebastian; in Saint Regulus' Altar" by Matteo Civitali in St. Martin's Cathedral, Lucca. Dating back to 1484 during the Early Renaissance period, this artwork showcases Civitali's mastery in sculpting religious figures with intricate details and lifelike expressions. The three statues stand tall on Saint Regulus' Altar, each representing a significant aspect of Christian religion. On the left stands St. John the Baptist, depicted as a strong and noble figure holding an inscription that symbolizes his role as a messenger preparing for Christ's arrival. Beside him is St. Regulus, portrayed with an instrument of communication - perhaps signifying his connection to spreading God's word among believers. In contrast to their serene presence, on the right side stands St. Sebastian - a male saint known for his martyrdom through arrows piercing his body. His expression reflects both pain and devotion as he gazes towards heaven. Surrounded by these powerful representations are abstract concepts such as death, allegory, and symbols associated with life and representations of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus – emphasizing themes central to Christian faith. The photograph was taken around 1900 by Brogi from Alinari using early photographic techniques that beautifully capture every delicate detail carved into these sculptures over five centuries ago. Through this image print, viewers can appreciate not only Civitali's artistic brilliance but also gain insight into Europe's rich cultural heritage during different periods like Renaissance-Baroque styles spanning across two millennia.
