Charles Deas Fine Art Print Collection

Charles Deas (1818-1867) was an American painter known for his portraits of Native Americans and his landscapes of the American West. He was born in Philadelphia and studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He traveled to Europe in 1842, where he studied with Thomas Couture and Charles Gleyre. After returning to America, he worked as a portrait painter in New York City before moving westward to St. Louis, Missouri and then on to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. In 1845 he joined a military expedition led by Stephen W. Kearny that explored the Rocky Mountains region of Colorado and Wyoming; during this journey Deas created numerous sketches that would later be used as reference material for his paintings. His works are characterized by their attention to detail and realism; they often depict scenes from everyday life among Native Americans or settlers on the frontier, such as hunting parties or campfires along riversides.
