A barrel in a bucket

All through practice for the 1969 Ultra Lightweight race, Fred Launchburys Bultaco had been troubled with seizures; after most sessions the barrel was removed and honed. Come race day, Fred finished third but, in post-race inspection, the bike was found to be a few thou oversize, The race organisers allowed time for the barrel to coll, even providing a bucket of water to see if they could cool it down. To no avail, the bike was still oversize. Fred was excluded and third place went to Gary Dickinson (Honda)

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the intense atmosphere of the 1969 Ultra Lightweight race. The image captures Fred Launchburys' Bultaco motorcycle, a true symbol of determination and perseverance. Throughout his practice sessions, Launchburys faced numerous setbacks as his bike was plagued with seizures. Each time, he diligently removed and honed the barrel in hopes of finding a solution. Race day arrived, and against all odds, Fred managed to secure an impressive third place finish. However, fate had other plans for him during post-race inspection. To everyone's dismay, it was discovered that his beloved Bultaco was slightly oversized by just a few thousandths of an inch. The race organizers sympathetically allowed some time for the barrel to cool down in order to rectify the issue. They even provided a bucket filled with water in their desperate attempt to bring it within regulations. Alas, despite their efforts and hopes pinned on cooling down the barrel, it remained stubbornly oversize. As a result of this unfortunate turn of events, Fred Launchburys was excluded from the final standings while third place honors were awarded to Gary Dickinson riding a Honda motorcycle instead. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder that sometimes even our best efforts can be thwarted by unforeseen circumstances beyond our control - yet another testament to both triumphs and tribulations experienced within motorsport history.
