Washbrook made 500 first-class appearances for the county between 1933 and 1959, scoring 27863 runs with 58 centuries. In 1954 he was appointed Lancashires first-ever professional captain. He played 37 tests for England.
Place played 298 first-class matches for the county between 1937 and 1955, scoring 14605 runs with 34 centuries. He played three tests for England against the West Indies in 1948
