EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Waterloo Medal, a prestigious silver medal with a delicate silk ribbon. Created by an English School artist in the 19th century, this artifact is now housed at the National Army Museum in London. The medal belonged to Major General Sir John Ormsby Vandeleur, a renowned military figure who played significant roles in various battles and campaigns. Vandeleur's distinguished career included commanding a light infantry brigade during the Peninsular War and participating in key conflicts such as the capture of Ciudad Rodrigo and battles of Salamanca, Vittoria, and the Nive. At the historic Battle of Waterloo, he led a brigade of light cavalry that came to the rescue of British heavy cavalry after their overzealous pursuit of defeated enemy forces. Notably, when Uxbridge was wounded during battle, Vandeleur assumed overall command of all cavalry units within Wellington's army. This exceptional leadership earned him great respect among his peers. The reverse side of this remarkable medal can be seen in another image (1268463). Its intricate design symbolizes Vandeleur's valiant efforts on behalf of his country during one of history's most pivotal conflicts – the Napoleonic Wars. This photograph not only captures an exquisite decoration but also immortalizes Sir John Ormsby Vandeleur's contribution to military history. It serves as a reminder of bravery and valor displayed by individuals like him during times of war.
