The Chitral Campaign - A Glimpse into the Intensity of 19th Century Warfare
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photo print, titled "The Chitral Campaign" takes us back to a significant military operation in the late 19th century. The engraving, created by an English School artist and part of a private collection, originally appeared in The Illustrated London News on May 25,1895. The image transports us to the rugged terrains near Panjkora River in present-day Pakistan. As we observe the scene unfold, we witness soldiers from Gordon Highlanders and Devons engaging with enemy forces amidst a burning village. With their military advantage on higher ground, they strategically fire upon their adversaries under Captain Peebles' command. The topography plays a crucial role as troops advance cautiously through this treacherous landscape. Tragically, lives are lost during this campaign as fallen bodies lay covered by guides seeking shelter within nearby villages. Colonel Battye's King's Own Borderers also feature prominently in this depiction of conflict. Although set far from home soil, these brave soldiers demonstrate unwavering determination reminiscent of their previous exploits in Crete and Greece. Through this historic engraving captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder's collection, we gain insight into the intensity and sacrifice endured during warfare in Europe at that time. It serves as a poignant reminder of the bravery displayed by those who fought valiantly for their nations while facing unimaginable challenges on foreign shores.
