EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Series Actualites, the comet, Ah! ma pauv madame Chaffarou, plate 392" by Honore Daumier takes us back to the year 1857. The artwork is part of the Marcel Lecomte Collection in Paris, France. In this satirical illustration from Le Charivari, Daumier depicts an old Parisian concierge named Madame Chaffarou standing amidst a chaotic scene. The lithograph humorously portrays her as she gossips with fellow Parisians about the impending arrival of Comet Charles-Quint on June 13th. According to prophecy, it was believed that this comet would bring about the end of the world. The artist captures Madame Chaffarou's expression of fear and disbelief as she exclaims, "Ah my dear madame Chaffarou, this surely must be the end!". In contrast to her distressing words, a dragon-like monster representing the approaching comet looms overhead while the sun appears to fade away. Daumier's caricature highlights everyday life during that period and pokes fun at society's obsession with gossip and superstition. The Maison Martinet publishing house published this piece as part of their Serie News of the Day collection. This intriguing print offers viewers a glimpse into historical events and societal attitudes through its clever satire and artistic style. It serves as a reminder that even in times past, people found solace or amusement in poking fun
