Brinkburn Grange and the Ruins of Brinkburn Priory, 1834

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This oil painting by John Wilson Carmichael takes us back to the enchanting landscape of Northumberland in the 19th century. The focal point is the majestic ruins of Brinkburn Priory, a medieval monastery that stood tall since its construction in the 12th century. Before its restoration in 1858, this painting captures the priory's dilapidated state with its missing roof and crumbling walls. Adjacent to the ruins stands Brinkburn Grange, an exquisite manor house designed by renowned architect John Dobson. Built between 1830 and 1837, Dobson skillfully crafted it in a style reminiscent of ancient manor houses to harmoniously blend with its historic surroundings. The composition showcases a picturesque scene: a tranquil river flowing gently beside these architectural wonders. The lush English countryside frames this idyllic setting, enhancing its serene beauty. Carmichael's attention to detail brings life to every brushstroke as he expertly captures light and shadow dancing across each surface. This artwork exemplifies Carmichael's close friendship with Dobson as he frequently painted houses designed by his talented companion. It serves as both a historical record and an artistic tribute to Northumberland's rich heritage. Displayed at Newcastle-upon-Tyne's Laing Art Gallery today, this print allows us to appreciate not only Carmichael's mastery but also England's timeless charm captured within this remarkable piece of
