Skyport 2000

15th February 1957: An architects model of Skyport 2000, a futuristic proposal for an airport building to stand in St Georges Circus, near Waterloo Station, London in the year 2000. Made for the Glass Age Development Committee and designed by architect James Dartford, the model shows how aircraft could land and take off from a giant platform supported by three glass-clad pillars. These would contain lifts carrying passengers down to a hotel, offices, and parking for private planes and cars. (Photo by Keystone/Getty Images)

Skyport 2000 - A Glimpse into the Future of Air Travel

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photograph showcases an architect's model of Skyport 2000, a visionary proposal for an airport building in London. Created by renowned architect James Dartford for the Glass Age Development Committee, this futuristic design aimed to revolutionize air travel in the year 2000. The model depicts a striking scene where aircraft gracefully land and take off from a colossal platform supported by three sleek glass-clad pillars. These pillars not only serve as architectural marvels but also house lifts that transport passengers to various amenities below. As we delve deeper into this imaginative concept, we discover a world within these transparent structures. The lifts carry passengers down to a luxurious hotel, modern offices, and even parking spaces designated for private planes and cars. This integration of transportation modes creates seamless connectivity for travelers seeking convenience and efficiency. Capturing the essence of progressiveness during its time, Skyport 2000 embodies innovation at its finest. Its verticality evokes awe-inspiring skyscrapers while offering glimpses into what could have been London's future air transport infrastructure. Although this ambitious project never came to fruition, it serves as a testament to human imagination and our unyielding desire to push boundaries. As we gaze upon this remarkable photograph today, let us appreciate the boldness of visionaries like James Dartford who dared to dream beyond their era's limitations.
