"Mendicant: A Journey Through the Lives of Begging Saints and Monks" Step into the world of mendicants, where saints and monks embraced a life of poverty and devotion. From Saint John of the Cross to Komuso Buddhist monks in Japan, their stories are etched in history. In an enchanting engraving from the 16th century, we witness Saint John of the Cross immersed in contemplation. The vibrant colors bring his spiritual journey to life, capturing his unwavering dedication. Traveling eastward to Japan, we encounter Komuso Buddhist monks who roamed ancient streets with bamboo flutes. Their beggar's robes concealed profound wisdom as they sought enlightenment through music. A workshop in Southern Germany crafted a masterpiece depicting Saint Alexius, a humble figure revered for renouncing wealth and living among beggars. This 17th-century artwork embodies humility and selflessness. Death spares no one, not even Mendicant Friars. In a gripping portrayal by an unknown artist, Death seizes a friar just as he enters eternity - reminding us that even those devoted to charity cannot escape mortality. The frozen Scheldt river becomes our backdrop as we observe "The Crane on the Antwerp Quay. " Painted in 1622 with meticulous detail on panel, this scene captures both beauty and hardship - much like the lives led by mendicants. "L'Aumone d'un Mendiant" invites us into another realm entirely - an oil painting that portrays compassion towards those less fortunate. It serves as a reminder that giving is not limited to material possessions but extends to kindness itself. From left to right stands Trinitarian friar alongside Dominican and Augustinian counterparts; together they represent different orders united by their commitment to serving others selflessly. An altar adorned with scenes from St Martin of Tours' life showcases acts of mercy depicted through vivid brushstrokes. Each panel tells a tale of compassion, inspiring all who behold it.
