Akhenaten, Ancient Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, 14th century BC (1926). After he ascended to the throne in c1350 BC Akhenaten (Amenhotep IV) set about transforming the religion of Ancient Egypt, replacing the existing polytheism with a monotheistic cult of worshipping Aten, the god of the disc of the Sun. In addition, he decreed that Egypts capital was to be moved from Thebes to a new site 180 miles to the north, to be named Akhetaten (modern El-Amarna). These massive upheavals generated growing opposition to Akhenaten, particularly amongst the priesthood. In c1334 BC Akhenaten died and Egypt turned its back on his reforms. The city of Akhetaten was abandoned and Egyptians returned to worshipping their traditional gods. A print from Kings and Queens of Ancient Egypt, portraits by Winifred Brunton, Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic figure of Akhenaten, an ancient Egyptian pharaoh who reigned during the 14th century BC. Created by artist Winifred Mabel Brunton in 1926, this portrait showcases the distinctive features and regal attire of this influential ruler. Akhenaten's reign was marked by radical religious reforms that aimed to replace Egypt's traditional polytheism with a monotheistic worship of Aten, the sun god. This transformation also involved moving Egypt's capital from Thebes to a new city named Akhetaten (modern El-Amarna). However, these drastic changes faced significant opposition from both the priesthood and society at large. Despite his efforts to reshape Egyptian religion and culture, Akhenaten's reign was short-lived. Upon his death in c1334 BC, Egypt swiftly returned to its traditional gods and abandoned Akhetaten. Nevertheless, this image serves as a testament to the impact and controversy surrounding Akhenaten's rule. Brunton skillfully portrays Akhenaten with intricate details such as his elaborate headdress and royal dress. The vibrant colors bring life to this ancient ruler while capturing the essence of royalty in Ancient Egypt. As we gaze upon this print today, it offers us a glimpse into one of history's most intriguing figures—a pharaoh whose heretical beliefs challenged long-standing traditions but ultimately failed to withstand the test of time.
