EDITORS COMMENTS
Assembly in the playground, Jews Free School, Stepney, London, 1908. This print captures a significant moment in the history of education for Anglo-Jewish children. In this image, we see a row of young boys lined up in perfect order for a mass assembly at the Jews Free School playground. Established as a Talmud Torah at the Great Synagogue back in 1732 to provide charity education to fifteen impoverished orphan boys, this institution grew over time to become Britain's largest Jewish school. Between 1880 and 1890 alone, one-third of all Anglo-Jewish children received their education within these very walls. Located on Bell Lane in Stepney, London County Council Photograph Library beautifully preserved this snapshot from our past. The Greater London Council (GLC) and Guildhall Library and Art Gallery have also played their part in safeguarding this historical treasure. Today known as JFS Comprehensive School, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of educational institutions that have shaped countless lives throughout generations. As we gaze upon these young faces filled with hope and curiosity, let us remember the profound impact that schools like Jews Free had on shaping communities and fostering learning. This remarkable photograph offers us an opportunity to reflect on how far we've come while honoring those who paved the way for future generations.
