C. S. Wright - Some Members Of The Supporting Parties As They Appeared On Their Return From The Polar Journey, January 1912, (1913). Physicist Charles Seymour Wright (1887-1975). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume I. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures physicist Charles Seymour Wright, a member of the supporting parties during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Taken in January 1912 by renowned photographer Herbert Ponting, this image is part of the collection titled "C. S. Wright - Some Members Of The Supporting Parties As They Appeared On Their Return From The Polar Journey". The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), aimed to continue scientific research and be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Led by Scott, this ambitious mission included experts from various fields such as geology, zoology, surgery, engineering, skiing expertise, meteorology, and physics. On 17th January 1912, Scott and his team consisting of Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans finally reached their destination at the South Pole. However, they were devastated to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there a month earlier. Tragically delayed by blizzards and dwindling supplies on their return journey from the Pole; Scott and his remaining team members perished in March 1912. It was not until eight months later that their bodies were discovered along with their poignant diaries. This historic photograph is sourced from "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , providing an invaluable visual record of one of history's most daring polar expeditions.
