Cloth of gold with felines and eagles, 1225-1275. Creator: Unknown

Cloth of gold with felines and eagles, 1225-1275. Mongol taste for luxury was equated with gold, symbol of imperial authority, power, and legitimacy. This splendid cloth of gold-exceptionally large and luxurious-may have enriched the interior of a palace or a majestic tent. The golden pattern, although tarnished on the faded red silk ground, features scalloped medallions with felines whose long tails terminate in dragons heads amid elegant floral vines. Double-headed eagles form interstitial motifs on the floral ground. A radiant gold-on-gold band of pseudo-Arabic script enriches the top, woven with gold strips wrapped around a silk core on a ground of flat strips of gold, immediately beneath the pattern testing area

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a remarkable piece of history, the "Cloth of gold with felines and eagles" dating back to 1225-1275. Created by an unknown artist, this cloth exemplifies the Mongol taste for opulence and luxury. In Mongolian culture, gold was not only a symbol of imperial authority but also represented power and legitimacy. The sheer grandeur of this exceptionally large textile suggests that it may have adorned the interior of a palace or even a majestic tent. Despite its faded red silk ground, the golden pattern still shines through, featuring scalloped medallions adorned with feline figures whose tails transform into dragon heads amidst intricate floral vines. Interstitial motifs in the form of double-headed eagles further enhance the overall design on this splendid cloth. Adding to its allure is a radiant band at the top woven with pseudo-Arabic script in gold-on-gold technique. This decorative element consists of gold strips wrapped around a silk core on a background made from flat strips of gold. Preserved in Northeast Iran, this lampas silk and gold thread masterpiece now resides at The Cleveland Museum of Art. Through Heritage Art's captivating photo print, we can appreciate every intricate detail and marvel at how such craftsmanship has stood the test of time.
