Court of Proprietors, East India Company, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Court of Proprietors, East India Company, 1844....a view of the General Court Room [in Leadenhall Street, London]. Its east side is occupied by rows of seats, which rise from the floor, near the middle of the room, towards the ceiling, backed by a gallery, where the public are admitted; on the floor are the seats for the chairman, secretary, and clerks. Against the west wall, in niches, are six statues of persons who have distinguished themselves in the Companys service: Lord Clive, Warren Hastings, and the Marquis Cornwallis occupy those on the left; and Sir Eyre Coote, General Lawrance, and Sir George Pococke those on the right. It is understood that the statue of the Marquis Wellesley will be placed in the vacant space in the middle. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1844, offering a glimpse into the prestigious Court of Proprietors of the East India Company. Located in Leadenhall Street, London, this General Court Room exudes an air of power and influence. The east side is adorned with rows of seats that ascend towards the ceiling, accompanied by a gallery where members of the public are granted access. Positioned on the floor are seats reserved for esteemed individuals such as the chairman, secretary, and clerks. Against the west wall stand six statues honoring prominent figures who have made significant contributions to the East India Company's legacy. Lord Clive, Warren Hastings, and Marquis Cornwallis grace one side while Sir Eyre Coote, General Lawrance, and Sir George Pococke occupy niches on the other. Interestingly enough, it is rumored that a statue of Marquis Wellesley will soon fill an empty space at their center. The atmosphere within this court room speaks volumes about British colonialism during this era. It symbolizes not only wealth and trade but also power dynamics inherent in institutions like these. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" provides us with a fascinating window into history - a reminder of how influential businessmen shaped nations through their involvement in commerce and politics.
