Cover of sheet music of The Battle March of Delhi, c1860

Cover of sheet music of The Battle March of Delhi, c1860. Robert Cornelis Napier (1810-1890), British military commander, making his triumphant entry into Delhi, Indian (Sepoy) Mutiny 1857-1859. The Indian Mutiny was an uprising against British rule in India which began in 1857. The mutiny had many underlying causes, but was sparked by the introduction of cartridges which were greased with animal fat. This outraged both Muslim and Hindu soldiers (sepoys), who made up the majority of the Indian army at the time. Although the mutiny was defeated in 1859, it led to the administration of India passing from the East India Company to the Crown. The capture of Delhi from the mutineers was vital to the British due to the citys symbolic importance as the seat of Indias Mughal rulers

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the cover of sheet music for "The Battle March of Delhi" from around 1860. The image depicts Field Marshal Robert Cornelis Napier, a British military commander, making his triumphant entry into Delhi during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-1859. The Indian Mutiny was an uprising against British rule in India that began due to various underlying causes but was sparked by the introduction of cartridges greased with animal fat. This act deeply offended both Muslim and Hindu soldiers (sepoys) who formed the majority of the Indian army at that time. Although the mutiny was eventually defeated in 1859, it marked a significant turning point as control over India shifted from the East India Company to direct administration under British Crown. Delhi's capture held immense symbolic importance for the British as it represented their victory over rebellious forces and also served as a seat for India's Mughal rulers. In this artwork, we see Napier on horseback leading his troops with great valor and determination. The vibrant colors and attention to detail bring this historical moment to life, showcasing not only Napier's military uniform but also highlighting elements such as flags and banners representing Britain's imperial presence in India. This print serves as a powerful reminder of colonialism, imperialism, and ultimately victory amidst rebellion during one of history’s most pivotal events –the Indian Mutiny.
