EDITORS COMMENTS
This disputed photograph captures the infamous train robber and outlaw, Sam Bass, during his notorious reign in the late 19th century. Believed to have been taken between 1877-1878, this image showcases a seated figure alleged to be Bass himself at the center of attention. Sam Bass gained notoriety as the leader of a gang that successfully held up a Union Pacific train at Big Springs, Nebraska on September 18th, 1877. Their audacious act resulted in stealing an astonishing $60,000 from the unsuspecting passengers. However, fate caught up with Bass when he was ambushed while scouting for a planned bank robbery in Round Rock Texas on July 19th, 1878. Sustaining fatal wounds during the ambush, he tragically succumbed to them just one day later. This print is sourced from "Pictorial History of the Wild West" by James D Horan and Paul Sann published in London in 1954. The black and white monochrome composition adds an air of mystery and intrigue to this portrait of Sam Bass - showcasing his rugged appearance complete with hat and mustache that became synonymous with outlaws like him during that time period.
