Evening Snow at Asuka Hill, from the series Eight Views of the Environs of Edo, c. 1837-38. Creator: Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858)

Evening Snow at Asuka Hill, from the series Eight Views of the Environs of Edo, c. 1837-38. This print series was first privately produced for the Taihaido poetry club led by a "wild" or comic verse (kyoka) poet with the humorous pen name Taihaido Donsho (or Nomimasu), which translates to "Hall of the Large Cup, Swallow a Liter (or Drink)." The initial print had three poems by members of the club at the top. This print, released as part of a public set of the series later on, has but a single poem, not featured in the original, which reads: The snow falling heavily in the dusk not only covers up signs that warn against breaking branches of the cherry trees on Asuka Hill, but breaks down the branches, as well. It is signed Shoyoan Kojin (or Takahito), which means "Hermitage of Pine and Cherry, High Person."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Evening Snow at Asuka Hill" transports viewers to the enchanting world of Edo-era Japan. Created by the renowned artist Utagawa Hiroshige in 1837-38, this piece is part of his series called "Eight Views of the Environs of Edo". Originally produced for a poetry club led by a comic verse poet known as Taihaido Donsho, this particular print was later released to the public. The image showcases a serene winter scene with heavy snowfall blanketing Asuka Hill. The falling snow not only conceals warning signs against breaking cherry tree branches but also causes them to collapse under its weight. The delicate beauty and destructive power of nature are juxtaposed in this poetic composition. Accompanying the artwork is a single poem, absent from the original version, which adds depth and meaning to the visual narrative. It speaks about how the dusk's heavy snowfall obscures cautionary signs while simultaneously damaging nature's fragile elements. Signed by Shoyoan Kojin (or Takahito), meaning "Hermitage of Pine and Cherry, High Person" this print exemplifies Hiroshige's mastery in capturing atmospheric landscapes through color woodblock printing techniques. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this heritage art piece allows us to appreciate both Hiroshige's artistic brilliance and gain insight into life during Japan's Edo period (1615-1868).
