Grand canoe reception given to the Prince of Wales on the St. Lawrence, 1860. Creator: Unknown

Grand canoe reception given to the Prince of Wales on the St. Lawrence, 1860. Ten canoes...prettily painted and decorated, and each manned by twelve Indians of the Iriquois tribe, in the employ of the Hudson's Bay Company, met the Prince [the future King Edward VII] as he crossed over to Isle Dorval from the village of Lachine...his Royal Highness was met by ten large canoes, each one filled with twelve stalwart Indians...[who] commenced a boat-song, which, as it floated over the water to the shore, sounded exceedingly musical...[After lunch], the Prince, accompanied by the Duke of Newcastle and General Williams, took their seats in a large bark canoe, and made a tour of the island...The paddles of the Indians glistened at each of the quick strokes which they gave, as, aided by the rapid currents, they strained every nerve to propel their canoes swiftly along the stream...On they came, chanting their boat-song, and occasionally sending up a shriek which resounded far and wide...They stretched in complete order across the river to Caughnawagha, and were paddled along the whole extent of that village, so that his Royal Highness might gain a just idea of the colossal proportions of the residences of the two thousand Indians who dwell there'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a grand and historic moment in Canadian history: the reception given to the Prince of Wales, who would later become King Edward VII, during his visit to Montreal in 1860. As the future monarch crossed the St. Lawrence River from Lachine to Isle Dorval, he was greeted by a breathtaking sight of ten beautifully painted and decorated canoes, each manned by twelve proud members of the Iroquois tribe, employed by the Hudson's Bay Company. The canoes approached the shore, and their occupants began to sing a traditional boat-song, creating a harmonious melody that echoed across the water. Following a delightful lunch, the Prince, accompanied by the Duke of Newcastle and General Williams, embarked on a tour of Isle Dorval in a large bark canoe. The Indians, with their paddles glistening in the sunlight, paddled with great vigor, propelling the canoe swiftly along the river. Their boat-song continued, occasionally interrupted by a triumphant shriek that resonated through the air. The canoes then formed a perfect line across the river to Caughnawagha, allowing the Prince to gain a true understanding of the impressive scale of the village, home to over two thousand Iroquois Indians. This photograph is an enduring testament to the rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality that welcomed the Prince during his visit to Canada, a moment that would forever be etched in the annals of history.
