Granite Hut, Cape Geology, 1911, (1913). Artist: T Griffith Taylor

Granite Hut, Cape Geology. Forde and Gran are cooking at the blubber stove, whose chimney projects behind the sledge roof tree, 1911, (1913). Rudimentary stone hut built amongst rocks at Granite Harbour. The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. From Scotts Last Expedition, Volume II. [Smith, Elder & Co. London, 1913]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Granite Hut at Cape Geology in 1911, during the final expedition of renowned British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. The Terra Nova Expedition, also known as the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), aimed to conduct scientific research and be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. The image showcases a rudimentary stone hut nestled amidst rocky terrain at Granite Harbour. In this particular scene, two members of Scott's team, Forde and Gran, are depicted cooking on a blubber stove. The chimney from the stove projects behind the sledge roof tree, adding an intriguing element to the composition. Scott's team consisted of various experts including a geologist, zoologist, surgeon, photographer, engineer, ski expert, meteorologist and physicist. Their goal was not only exploration but also advancing scientific knowledge about Antarctica. Tragically for Scott and his companions Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans; their journey ended in despair. Despite reaching the South Pole on 17 January 1912 after enduring treacherous conditions and delays caused by blizzards; they discovered that Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had already beaten them there by a month. Running out of supplies on their return journey due to unforeseen circumstances led to their demise at the end of March. It took eight months before their bodies were found along with poignant diaries documenting their heroic efforts. This evocative photograph is part of "Scotts Last Expedition". Volume II published in London in 1913 by Smith Elder & Co. , serving as both a testament to human resilience in extreme environments and a reminder of one of history's most tragic polar expeditions.
